Student Evaluation & Reporting

Teachers use a wide variety of strategies to gather information to evaluate students and report to parents.

Project work, class presentations, teacher observations, individual student work, and collections of student work samples (portfolios) are but some of the strategies in use.

Traditional “pencil and paper” tests start in “late” early years, leading to year-end examinations for students in late middle years (grades 7 & 8)

In early years, great care is taken to recognize the different ages at which students develop their particular skills and abilities. Just as all children didn’t walk or talk at the same age, so varies the age at which learning becomes evident. Please keep this in mind when you receive reports that measure academic achievement relative to grade level curriculum outcomes.

Students in grades 5 and beyond receive percentage grades. By senior years (grade 9 and beyond), students receive percentage marks and credits on a subject-by-subject basis.

From Grades 1-8 written reports are provided to parents in December, March and June. At all levels scheduled conferences are held in October and February. Most conferences will include students. Learning is the student’s responsibility, and where they are involved in understanding the situation and any goals set for improvement, success is more likely to occur. Portions of conferences without the student present are available upon request to the teacher.
